Project Manager interview questions

Each question below includes what the interviewer is actually testing. That matters more than the answer itself — once you know what is being probed, you can answer from your own experience instead of reciting someone else’s script, which is obvious to everyone in the room.

1

“Tell me about a project that failed.”

What they are really testing

Accountability. "We delivered late because stakeholders changed scope" is the answer that ends candidacies.

How to answer

Own a decision that was yours — a risk you underweighted, an escalation you delayed. Then name the specific practice you changed and how it played out on the next project.

2

“How do you handle a stakeholder who keeps expanding scope?”

What they are really testing

Whether you can say no while preserving the relationship.

How to answer

Never refuse outright — price it. Show the tradeoff in time, budget, or scope and make them choose. Describe the change-control mechanism that made the tradeoff visible rather than personal.

3

“Your project is going to miss its date. When and how do you escalate?”

What they are really testing

Whether you surface bad news early or hope.

How to answer

The moment confidence drops, not when the date arrives. Bring the recovery options with the news — options turn a complaint into a decision request.

Before the interview, get past the screen

None of this matters if your resume is filtered out first. The most common cause is not a weak background — it is a document that screening software cannot read correctly, or one that lists duties where it should show results.

Check your resume against project manager keywords or run a full scan. Both are free and take about three seconds.
